About the Book

The Rise of Corporate Social Responsibility in a Turbulent Global Landscape

This book explores the increasing significance of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the face of complex global challenges. The concept gained prominence during the tenure of United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Recognizing the limitations of solely government-driven solutions, he advocated for a more collaborative approach.

In 1999, at the World Economic Forum, Secretary-General Annan launched a groundbreaking initiative based on ten core principles encompassing human rights, labor practices, environmental sustainability, and anti-corruption measures. This initiative, rapidly evolving into the United Nations Global Compact, aimed to embed these principles into corporate strategies and foster a culture of integrity within the business community.

The book then analyzes the subsequent evolution of the global economic landscape, highlighting the major shift that occurred after 2003. This period witnessed a confluence of interconnected crises – political and economic upheaval in Iraq, coupled with the global financial crisis of 2008 and the subsequent global recession. Furthermore, regional instability stemming from the Syrian War, the Lebanese government’s financial collapse, and the renewed Iranian sanctions compounded the situation.

More recently, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global supply chains and triggered economic downturns across nations. The ongoing war in Ukraine has exacerbated these disruptions, particularly in the global food supply network. Additionally, a severe global drought, impacting Iraq significantly, has further strained government resources.

The convergence of these events underscores the limitations of governments in responding effectively to complex challenges. This, in turn, strengthens the argument for robust corporate social responsibility, as initially championed by Secretary-General Annan. Businesses and business communities have a vital role to play in supporting civil societies and bolstering collective resilience in the face of these interconnected crises.

This book delves deeper into the specific ways corporations can integrate social responsibility principles into their operations, contributing to a more sustainable and equitable future.
